From the supplier: The board of directors in rural electric cooperatives should make sure that the health and welfare of the system is not being threatened. This responsibility requires them to assess not only present conditions but also future developments that may affect the industry and, in particular, the cooperative for which they work. However, understanding and participating changes in the future is not the end of their task. More importantly, they have to prepare the cooperative for this future. This is what strategic leadership is all about. At present, there are five strategic issues that directors should consider. These are the industry transition to a deregulated market marked by increased competition, the new relationship between costs and rates, the role of information technology in transforming the business, the emerging role of grassroots movements, and the new requirements for director, manager and employee competencies.
